Ahead of the 2023 season, Shaun McMurray has taken the decision to leave Kings Hill Cricket Club and move on to his next cricketing chapter.
Shaun joined Kings Hill in 2012 and was Club Captain and skipper of the Kings Hill 1st XI from 2013 to 2021. In 2022 he stepped down as skipper but continued as a player for the 1st XI, taking 30 wickets at 11.00 and averaging 32 with the bat last season.
He will finish his time at Kings Hill on the cusp of a number of personal milestones. He played 149 league games for the Kings Hill First XI, scoring 3,494 runs at 45.97 with 16 fifties and 11 hundreds. He also took 299 wickets at an average of just 10.83.
Shaun’s competitive approach helped to drive the 1st XI up through the leagues and put our young club into the company of some of the leading and long-established clubs in Kent.
Across all cricket he’s played for Kings Hill over the last decade, Shaun’s taken 388 wickets scored just shy of 5,000 runs in 193 games, an incredible all-round record that's unlikely to be surpassed any time soon.
We asked a few of the longer serving members of the club, as well as those who’ve played with Shaun over the years, to share a few thoughts on his time at Kings Hill.
There is no doubt whatsoever that Kings Hill Cricket Club would not be in the position it is today without Shaun. He joined the club in 2012 and right from the outset, introduced a whole new level of quality and commitment. As well as having a wealth of experience from many years playing high quality cricket, he brought a much needed sense of professionalism and enabled the club to start its progress to where we find ourselves today.
Shaun took on the captaincy in his second year and oversaw outstanding progress from the Kent Regional League through to the full Kent League. The weight of his runs and the sheer number of wickets meant that for several seasons he led not just the club stats but also those of the leagues.
Shaun will be greatly missed on the field of play but we wish him all the best in his role and he should know he's always welcome at our club.
Nick McGeorge - KHCC Chair
Shaun is certainly a person that Kings Hill CC is going to miss going forward! An integral part of creating the club and 1st team that we have today. Shaun is the reason I came to play for Kings Hill and it was great to play under him for four seasons. His captaincy was alway spot on while making sure to contribute with bat and ball and so good to keep to as well!
A lot of the great parts about our club are down to the hard efforts and dedication Shaun put in over the last 10 years to make it what it is, so rightfully he will be remembered as a key part of the club’s legacy.
I’d like to thank Shaun from all the 1st team boys, as without him many of us wouldn’t be playing in such a successful side! We wish you all the best going forward onto your next cricketing chapter, mate.
Jamie Green - 1st XI and Club Captain
I’m not going to talk about Shaun’s contribution on the field over the last 10 years, as this has been well documented. He started the KHCC revolution and is one of the main reasons (if not the number one reason) why we as a club have been so successful.
As a person, Shaun is an incredibly loyal and determined character. There are few people I know that possess such focus and dedication. He’s an exceptional person that looks after the people around him and gives time to everyone that shares his vision. I count Shaun as one of my closest friends over the last decade and will be forever grateful for his contribution to the club, and his friendship.
My fondest memories on a cricket field have been shared with Shaun, both indoor and outdoor. He took me under his wing and supported me and helped me to improve over the years. Not just on the field but off it too.
Shaun - I’m genuinely gutted that you’re leaving the club but fully understand your reasoning. I will miss seeing you around the club and our boundary walks and chats. Wishing you every success for the future. Thank you for everything.

Shaun has been a major contributor to the position the club finds itself in today, not only with his leadership, wickets and runs on the field but to the development and structure of the club over the last 10 years. Shaun successfully attracted new players and put the foundations in place for our current success with coaching, development of the senior and juniors as they moved into the senior teams.
His personal contribution to the team on the field can clearly be seen around the pavilion walls with the most wickets and runs in a season over a number of years. This should not distract from all the efforts off the field which go unseen and contribute to our continuing success.
Shaun, it was a pleasure and Kings Hill CC and I appreciate your time with us.
Gary Jackson - KHCC President
Kings Hill Cricket Club entered their first ever year of league cricket in 2012. It was a tough first year in the Kent Regional Cricket League, starting in the lowest league group and not doing much in the way of winning. Commitment was strong but we were short on quality!
With a desire to be competitive for the 2013 season a plan was hatched in late 2012. Introductions were made and a plan of action was presented to the club committee. Shaun McMurray joined the club to improve all things relating to cricket.
2013 was the start of a decade of success. We were unbeaten in the league that year, with some fantastic moments of team spirit and personal performances.
Shaun has been the catalyst to raise the standard of cricket at KHCC. He has led from the front, always at winter nets, mid week training and playing all season, without fail.
On a personal level I would like to thank Shaun for his commitment and outstanding contribution to making the club what it is today. Absolute legend!

It’s without doubt that the club would not be where it is now without Shaun’s vision, influence and contribution.
He built the successful foundations that aided KHCC’s rapid rise through the ranks by attracting talent, nurturing existing players and instilling confidence and team spirit. Winning was definitely contagious in all of our teams and will continue to be, thanks to his legacy.
Personally I have a lot to thank Shaun for. First of all persuading me to join the project, helping me evolve as a player, and introducing me to captaincy. We’ve had many a long conversation about tactics and strategy and I already miss our team selection ding dongs!
Gutted its come to an end, but without a doubt Shaun’s earned the keys to the kingdom and is welcome back anytime. Now we are both retired KHCC captains, I’ll be bending his ear about golf next.

I had the pleasure of playing alongside Shaun McMurray for most of his 10 years at KHCC. There is one thing that I will never forget, which is permanently imprinted in my cricketing brain. One Saturday afternoon, I had a very quiet time behind the stumps. He came up to me and politely requested that I appeal a bit more vigorously. "Kev, you must always put doubt in the umpire's mind." How true… Not long after that, he ended up with his best bowling figures of 7 for 11 against Blackheath Wanderers in 2017. He has been an awesome cricketer and a great clubman for KHCC. He will be sorely missed.
Good luck, Shaun, in your next adventure. Best wishes.

Shaun brought me into the club and into the 1st team. A very knowledgeable cricketer, always pushing those around him to keep up to the level required. What he has done for Kings Hill and the club’s legacy should be rightly recognised. A high quality operator, no nonsense, and very much appreciated by all that played with him. He set the standard for everyone to follow.

To a Kings Hill Legend! Shaun, it's been quite the journey and a special Kings Hill career, and I feel honoured to have shared the same field with you over a number of years. There's been ups and downs throughout, but the league titles, personal records, banter, but more importantly the friendship we have shared will stay with me forever. You backed me with both bat and ball, probably been more injured than I can remember which added to the grey hair, shared great golf games together, but probably the most important, you were a key figure in creating what KHCC is today. I wish you well and hope to still see you around. Go well!
